Our tributes to Late Shri Vimal Kumar Jain who died at Pune in a Road accident. He was a Guest of Honor at our Inaugural Function and Honoring the Donors on June 5, 2011 and in a brief speech of less than three minutes left a big impression. While explaining the essence of charity, he also showed the way it should be done and at the same time not to let down the person who is recipient of Charity.

Trust mans stall at JITO Trade Fair 2011 at Hyderabad

District Collector attends Coupon Distribution program

The District Collector of Hyderabad, Mr. Natarajan Gulzar attended the coupons distribution programme of the trust on March 27th. Mr. Gulzar was very impressed with the activities of the trust and has promised all help in the activities of the trust including the new dialysis center at King Kothi Hospital.

Former President Abdul Kalam briefed about Trust's subsidized dialysis programme

Members of the trust visited Former President of India, H.E. Shri Abdul Kalam recently where they briefed him about the subsidized dialysis programme of the trust. Shri Kalam was all praise for the programme and gave various suggestions on how people could be served better. He thought adding a mobile dialysis unit would greatly improve reach to patients.

BREAKING NEWS: TRUST TO OPEN DIALYSIS CENTER IN KING KOTI HOSPITAL

The Govt. of Andhra Pradesh has agreed to provide over 5,000 square feet of space in District Hospital, King Koti, Hyderabad. There will be no rental costs.

The trust thanks the Govt. of Andhra Pradesh through the Andhra Pradesh Vaidya Vidhan Parishad, the Andhra Pradesh Health and Medical Infrastructure Development Corporation and the Andhra Pradesh Health Secretary for this extraordinary gesture. Here is the GO issued for the purpose:

The trust is already in the process of setting up an ultra-modern center with 24 dialysis stations. The plan is to start in the first quarter of 2011.

Trust beneficiary completes M. Sc. (Physics)

We are very pleased to inform you that one of the beneficiaries of the trust's dialysis scheme, Ms. Azra Banu has just completed her M. Sc. (Physics) in First Division from Osmania University!

Ms. Banu is a stellar example of what someone can achieve with hard work and determination despite being on dialysis. Monthly Distribution of Coupons, 200+ patients avail coupons
Date: 27th June, 2010

The monthly distribution of coupons was carried out at the Vikranti Cinema compound. We are glad to report that about 200 patients availed the facilities and about 1600 dialysis coupons were issued.

Jagrati (an awakening) a huge success, Rs. 2.5 crore committed on single day
Date: 14th March, 2010

The Trust organized an event called 'Jagrati - an awakening' for its subsidized dialysis programme where the famous singer Roop Kumar Rathod performed live in front of a huge audience.

The live concert was followed by an extremely thought-provoking talk by Shri Deepak Shah from Ahmedabad.

The event was a huge success and donors opened their hearts and purses and committed a huge sum of Rs. 2.5 crores including the cost for 32 dialysis machines!

The trust has supplied injections that cost more than Rs. 1,000 in the market at Rs. 380 only! During this period, 3,479 injections were supplied which would have been worth more Rs. 37 lakhs in the market!

About us

Our mission is to improve the quality of life of people who require dialysis and cannot afford the medical expenses incurred.

A healthy individual has two kidneys which perform many tasks, the most important being the cleaning of the blood to remove toxins and excess water. When the kidneys do not function normally, there is a build up of toxins and water in the body which can be life-threatening.

Dialysis is a process by which the blood in the body is cleaned artificially to remove these toxins and the excess water. Dialysis is of two types - Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis. There is one more option for patients whose kidneys are not functioning normally. They can go in for a kidney transplant where a kidney of a healthy individual is removed and placed in the person whose kidneys are not functioning. Since the body needs only one kidney to function, both the individuals can live reasonably healthy lives.

Dialysis is an expensive process. A session of hemodialysis costs between Rs. 800 to Rs. 3,000 depending on the center it is being done in. In India, most people get two to three sessions of three to five hours each every week. Considering this, the monthly expenses of dialysis alone run into several thousands of rupees.

Added to this, most dialysis patients have a few other complications such as anemia (low blood counts) and cardiovascular problems. Due to this, they need a host of other medications, the most important one being Erythropoietin injections every week which help the body maintain the blood counts at a reasonable level. This injection also is very expensive.

The Bhagwan Mahavir Jain Relief Foundation trust was founded by sixteen like minded Jain friends who saw the insurmountable problems being faced by people with kidney failure who could not afford these expenses and were forced to give up and accept death as the only resort. Our only objective is to give such people a ray of hope. We do not not discriminate based on religion, caste, language or community. We only want to help truly deserving people get a fighting chance of living a life that is as close to normal as possible.

If you are a patient requiring dialysis or you know anyone in your family or friends requiring and are not able to afford cost of treatment, do not worry. Our trust is here to help you. We will try to assist you in whatever manner we can to the best of our abilities.

Simply call one of our trustees or send us an email with your contact details. All we require is a prescription from your nephrologist stating that you need dialysis. You will need to come to the office of the trust on the last Saturday of the month at:

The basic scheme is "One dialysis for Rs. 500". It is very simple! You can multiply that figure by the number of dialysis sessions you wish to sponsor and donate the amount.

What we do

Our main objective is to provide dialysis at a subsidized cost to the patients who require it but cannot afford it. We also provide, at a subsidy, other things necessary for a dialysis patient such as dialyser (artificial kidney) to be used for dialysis, tubing sets to be used during dialysis, erythropoietin injections etc.

We have tied up with some hospitals in the city that will provide dialysis to patients at Rs. 800 per session. The trust bears Rs. 500 of this cost while the patient has to bear Rs. 300 per session. On the last Sunday of every month, we distribute coupons to the patients for the following month, each coupon entitling a person to a single session of dialysis at a particular hospital. The patient can avail of any number of coupons.

The patient goes with these coupons to the hospital and presents it along with a cash payment of Rs. 300 and gets a session of dialysis. The hospital collects Rs. 500 per coupon from the trust periodically.

So, the patients can get a session of dialysis for as little as Rs. 300 compared to the Rs. 800 to Rs. 3000 per session they would otherwise have to pay. Often, this is the difference between continuing to live life and accepting death as the only option.

We also make available the dialyser and tubing sets that are required for dialysis to the patients at subsidized costs. We get these directly from the manufacturers. Since we buy these in bulk, we get it a lower cost and provide these to the patients at cost.

Most dialysis patients also need erythropoietin injections to maintain their blood levels at healthy values. There are different strengths of this injection and the most commonly used injection is of strength 4000 units. Most patients have to take 1 to 3 such injections every week. Each injection costs between Rs. 865 to Rs. 2000 in the market depending on the brand. The trust is making this injection available at Rs. 380 to patients.

By providing dialysis, the associated consumables and other ancillary medicines, the trust is trying to make the burden of kidney disease a little easier to bear for patients and their families. We realize that we cannot take away the primary disease from the patient. This, unfortunately, is something the patient has to live with. What we are trying to do is to make sure that life for these unfortunate people becomes a little less painful, a little less burdensome and yes, a little more cheerful!
